The Story of Merchant House in Launceston
Cornwall’s most important 16th century domestic house?
Moresk Centre, St Clement Street, Truro – Mon, 18th November, 2pm. (admission free)

The talk by David Scott will focus on the restoration and emergence of a C16 townhouse built on an earlier C12 house. The building was found as a time warp untouched for 120 years with impressive plaster, ceilings, joinery and decoration. Built and owned by early merchants and occupied by successive Mayors and surgeons, it became an important civic building which somehow survived the Victorian taste for demolition and redevelopment, declining into a retail emporium, boarding house and tea room. The talk, with extensive slides, discusses the finds and research towards an ultimate new use.
David Scott is an accomplished and highly experienced professional who commands respect on all sides of the ongoing conservation and heritage debate. This is a talk not to be missed if you care about heritage and conservation. As town centres re-purpose buildings, and climate change compels change, as values and priorities change, the pressure on our treasure-house of listed, Local Listed and Conservation features is intensifying.
